Negawatts are those watts that go to waste - we pay for them but don't benefit from them. MIT have developed a system to identify heat leakage from buildings in a method similar to Google SteetView. Now the question is - how do you save those watts?

I personally would like to see piezoelectric devices on a micro-or nano level which would harvest energy from vibrations (such as people stepping off an escalator, or roads/speedbumps etc. for that matter. I saw a couple of years ago an Israeli company in this area. Forgot their name though...
